South county java heads, here’s some caffeinated buzz: Clematis Street’s Subculture Coffee spot soon will pour its edified coffees in Delray Beach’s dining hub.
Subculture, the 11-month-old café co-owned by Rodney Mayo and artisanal coffee roaster Sean Scott, plans to open a second location by the end of February on Atlantic Avenue (in the former Atlantic Smoothies space).
Like the downtown West Palm Beach spot, the new location will roast its beans onsite, serve specialty coffees, juices, local craft beers and some baked goods. The new space will also serve as the principal juicing station for the popular Alchemy Juice Co., which sells its fresh-pressed, bottled juices at Subculture.
The Delray café, which will offer more outdoor seating than its West Palm sister, will aim for a relaxed, big-city vibe that has made Subculture a hip spot to lounge.
“We kind of wanted to create more of that urban feel. Just to give it a different texture. It’s the kind of Brooklyn-style place that, even though it’s new, it looks like it’s been established for a while,” says Scott, the coffee master who previously owned Clematis Street’s Habatat Coffee Company inside the Habatat Galleries, which closed in December 2013.
He opened the small Subculture Coffee location last March on Clematis’ 500 block, where Mayo’s restaurant group runs three successful establishments (Hullabaloo, LongBoards and Respectable Street).
One fancy new feature destined for the Delray spot: a Modbar espresso system, which gives the barista more control over the variables that make a stellar demitasse of café.
