What’s better than a good taco? Tacos and hip-hop, that’s what.
At least that’s the idea behind Tacos & Hip-Hop night at Subculture Coffee in West Palm Beach. Set to be a monthly event, the idea was born when South Florida DJ Selecta Steve — AKA Steven Pershad — glimpsed a YouTube video of people doing a music and burger night in Berlin.
“I thought it was a great idea and decided to pitch it to Subculture, but with tacos instead of burgers,” says Pershad. “I mean, everyone loves tacos.”
Subculture co-owner and roaster Sean Scott agreed. The two banded together and quickly sussed out a plan that would pair street-style tacos with fresh beats and house-made sangria one night each month.
The event is a fusion of local talent. Subculture Coffee will provide the outdoor alley space. DJ Selecta Steve will mix the beats all night long. A Camelot Yacht Club bartender will offer his homemade red and white sangria. Celis Produce owner Alex Celis will provide the locally grown, organic produce. And Zipitio’s — a start-up food truck specializing in a Meso-American take on Mexican fare — will make the tacos.
Zipitio’s was founded by an El Salvadorian family including cousins Ricky and Jean Perez, Paul Martinez, and Ricky’s girlfriend, Niria Proa. The chef of the family, Jean, relocated from Orlando to launch the truck with his family; together, the trio have put a South American twist on the traditional Mexican taco, giving each take the authentic flavors of their homeland. Before they hit the streets, their menu can be sampled at Subculture’s monthly Tacos & Hiphop night.
